Project Description

Lift Modernisation

JOHN RADCLIFFE HOSPITAL

The John Radcliffe Hospital is the largest of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust hospitals. It is Oxfordshire’s main accident and emergency centre and houses a Children’s Hospital, Heart Centre, Eye Hospital, Women’s Centre and many departments of Oxford University Medical School.

Liftec are immensely proud of our long-standing relationship with the Trust which dates back to 2015 when we were awarded our first annual lift maintenance contract for 21 passenger and bed lifts.

In December 2019, Liftec were awarded a lift modernisation and refurbishment contract for ten traction passenger lifts and one hydraulic bed lift across the main John Radcliffe building, Women’s Centre Maternity Block and Trauma Unit. The award also included three full lift replacements in the Academic Centre.

Working to exceed the latest NHS HTM 08-02 Lift standards and a staggered replacement plan that limited inconvenience to the hospital’s patients, staff, and visitors, Liftec engineers carefully completed the removal of the old equipment, prior to the commencement of the new installation work.

One of the key objectives involved splitting the existing traction lift group control system and installing new Lester Controls ALMEGA II lift controllers. The modernisation also included the replacement of the lift cars, new ILE GAL doors, Thyssen SC400 gearless motors and Safeline 4-way autodiallers. Liftec engineers also upgraded the bed lift with a new Bucher Saturn Alpha hydraulic power unit.

During the phased programme of modernisation work, Liftec engineers worked closely with the Hospital’s management to ensure COVID and all other safety requirements were complied with. Also, as with other live hospital projects of this kind, our on-site team took great care to prevent noise and operation disturbance.

The modernisation work for all ten lifts and one bed lift was successfully completed in January 2022.
